Ketchikan Gateway Recreational Center
Ketchikan's coastal climate and long rainy season discourages many outdoor activities. Consequently, the objective of this design was to provide for as complete a range of indoor activities as possible to compensate for the lack of outdoor opportunities due to often inclement weather.
Major elements of the 44,500 SF center include two basketball courts, racquetball courts, elevated running track, weight room, aerobics room, game areas as well as classrooms, offices and locker rooms. The site, shared with an existing elementary school, is steeply sloped from east to west. A small stream flows between the new building and the school. The building is set into the slope and parking is distributed to reduce the apparent impact on the site.
By reducing the apparent size, expressing elements of human scale and using colors reflecting local natural materials, the building serves as a friendly neighbor for the elementary school and nearby residences.
