Denali Elementary School

A 64,000 SF replacement school where Kumin's responsibilities spanned from concept through construction administration and plans for demolition of the original school. Denali Elementary contains 25 classrooms, an art room, multipurpose room with stage, gymnasium, music room, library, commons, and a kitchen, administrative and office space. Denali also serves as a montessori school and is the District's primary intensive specialty needs program provider.

Problem solving abilities were put to the test with the ASD's goal of increasing the outdoor student activity area and Denali having the smallest site of any school in Anchorage.

The challenge was configuring a 2-story classroom approach that allowed for direct exiting from the second level without the use of stairs, elevators or unsightly ramps. By reinventing the topography of the site, we were able to relocate the sledding hill to provide the desired second story access, at the same time creating a much more graceful landscape than existed previously and increasing the outdoor student activity area by 30 percent.
