Unalaska Elementary School
A project that began with a site location study for a new elementary school in Unalaska. In the following years, Kumin then provided planning and design for the facility - a 27,000 SF school that included 14 classrooms (all with radiant heated floors), a preschool facility, gym, library, cafeteria, music room, and administrative spaces. Site amenities include a covered play area, large playground, and a soccer field.
The design incorporates clerestories for maximum infiltration of natural light and interior color selections mimic local landscapes. Kumin's interior design team developed custom casework based on space needs expressed by the school faculty and custom tile patterns in the lobby and bathrooms. The Aleutian Islands are a dramatic setting - massive rolling hills set in ocean, wind and rain. This school was an opportunity to encourage children to embrace this extraordinary landscape while providing a safe, sheltered learning environment. Key priorities included natural light, capturing views, and creating protective outdoor spaces and most significantly providing a building that withstands the elements and works.
