Glenn Massay Theater - UAA Mat-Su Campus
The new Glenn Massay Theater opened recently to great acclaim! A joint venture with the University of Alaska Anchorage and the Matanuska-Susitna College, the theater provides a new venue for assembly, lecture, performances and other campus and community-wide events. The new 30,000 SF facility features a 523-seat proscenium theater, as well as a multi-function lobby, dressing rooms, scene shop, control room, follow spot booth, loading dock, costume shop, and green room.
Modern theatrical equipment systems are included: stage rigging and lighting systems, sound reinforcement and playback, production communications systems, an audience assistive listening system, an orchestra pit, and adjustable elements to modify the acoustic response of the room for music or spoken word events.
The building design was conceived as a study of the experiences of audience and performers. Upon approach, visitors to the building naturally assume the role of audience; the scrim of the lightly fritted glass façade permits softened views to the activity within. Much like the stage curtain or scrims might open up to reveal the players, the undulating glass parts in the center to reveal the primary entry in the overlap. Overarching ideas of timelessness and drama contribute to the concept and palette with the goal of creating a facility that inspires!
