Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station Fuel Storage Facility

Under a U.S. Navy contract, Kumin designed this fuel storage facility at the South Pole that holds 450,000 gallons of AN-8 diesel grade fuel for the South Pole Base operations.

A truly unique project, the facility is buried in the 9,000' thick Antarctic ice cap to maintain an average storage temperature of -56 degrees F and shelter from ambient temperatures that reach -117 degrees F.

Design constraints included stringent environmental protection and limited access by ski equipped LC-130 aircraft only.
